A journey through conifer forests and epic views
Day 3 of the Innsbruck Trek proved to be one of the longest hikes of the entire journey ~ not just because of the distance but because of the incredible landscapes we traversed. This was one of those days where time felt irrelevant, as the route unfolded in front of us, and we had all the time in the world to appreciate the beauty around us.
The start of the journey: Feldringalm
The day began with a drop-off at the Sattele bus station, where our goal was to reach the Feldringalm. Or so I thought. Here’s a friendly reminder: always double-check your map and signs! Even after a dozen visits to this area, the excitement of the day, combined with the warm heat, had me veering off track for a bit. But hey, that’s all part of the adventure, right?
We corrected our course and continued along a dirt road that meandered through the coniferous forest. The shade was a welcome relief from the heat, and the sounds of the forest accompanied us on our way. When we finally reached Feldringalm, we were the first ones there, so we decided to order a coffee and enjoy the peaceful morning. There’s something special about having a place all to yourself ~ especially when you’re surrounded by mountains and fresh air.
The greenest meadows and the views of Kühtai
After our break, the route took us up a short but steep section that led to the lush, vibrant meadows of Feldringer Böden. It was like stepping into a painting ~ endless green fields stretching beneath a vast sky. As we climbed higher, the landscape revealed its true splendor. Reaching Marlstein, we were met with one of the most epic views of the entire trek. From one end of the horizon to the other, the entire Kühtai mountain range stood before us, its peaks piercing the sky. The sight was so breathtaking, I couldn’t help but stop and take it all in for a moment. Sometimes, the beauty of the world takes your breath away.
Following the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Weg
From there, we continued along the historic Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Weg trail, which took us through more wild landscapes and stunning views. The trail wound its way through the heart of the mountains, offering glimpses of the surrounding peaks and valleys with every turn. After what felt like an eternity of taking in these majestic views, we reached the Längental valley. The journey was beginning to feel like a physical and emotional connection to the land. There’s something deeply humbling about walking through such raw, untouched nature.
A well-deserved rest at Dortmunder Hütte
The final stretch of the day led us to the Dortmunder Hütte, a welcoming hut that was the perfect place to unwind after a challenging 10-kilometer hike. After dipping my legs in the cold mountain water, I was ready for a rest. Nothing beats the feeling of cool water on sore muscles after a long day of hiking. We celebrated with a hearty drink and took a moment to reflect on the incredible landscapes we had crossed.
